We are Sarah and Marieke, school friends who both became teachers and then Heads of PSHE. We started PSHEasy because of a deeply held belief that PSHE is as important as it is underfunded and undervalued. We plan to use our experience and different areas of expertise to support PSHE teachers in creating and delivering outstanding PSHE lessons. Our aim is to make PSHE effective, enjoyable and, of course, easy!
I have been a teacher for sixteen years and, since the birth of my son, have been working as a private tutor. My subjects are psychology and biology, which I have found particularly useful when delivering the "health" elements of the PSHE curriculum. When I became Head of PSHE, I created a bespoke PSHE curriculum for the school, with associated teaching resources. As part of that role, I undertook training in delivering age-appropriate sex and relationship education. At two of my schools, I founded and ran Pride clubs for LGBTQ+ students and provided staff training on LGBTQ+ inclusion. As a student, I volunteered with the St John Ambulance and, more recently, became a qualified mental health first aider. I enjoy swimming, yoga, amateur dramatics and learning British Sign Language.
I was a full-time teacher for ten years, and my passion for PSHE came about through discussions I had with classes desperate to get me talking about anything other than the Latin they were meant to be learning. When I took on the role of PSHE lead, I discovered a need for high-quality, teacher-friendly resources that could be delivered in a very limited time allocation. Before qualifying as a teacher, I worked as a legal secretary and paralegal while completing my LLM in Legal Practice, which has left me with a nerdy love of drafting policies and interpreting statutes. I am very interested in mental health and wellbeing, and while at university I was heavily involved in student welfare, co-running a student helpline service and training volunteers in listening skills. More recently, I have completed courses in child and adolescent mental health and understanding autism. I live in the West Midlands with my husband, two children and a standard poodle called Hector. I love knitting (constantly), singing (badly) and outdoor swimming (the colder the better).
